Just one of several historical building renovations completed in Newton during the past  few years. Working hand in glove with the Texas Historical Commission, volunteers  accepted the extensive project of renovating the old Ford Male and Female College, later the Powell Hotel.

Abandoned as a viable business in 1954, the Newton County  Historical Commission was granted title from the Powell Family heirs and restoration was  complete in 2001.  The picture on the left was taken just prior to commencement of the project.  The building was truly leaning as shown in the picture on the left and was in  danger of collapse!

Now a Museum and the home of Newton County Chamber of Commerce VISITORS CENTER, the Old Powell Hotel second floor has 9 rooms that are decorated with artifacts of residents who stayed there from 1909 to 1954.  The lower floor has a restored classroom, dining room and kitchen with artifacts of days long gone.

Make arrangements to have a personal tour of the facility during your stay at WHISPERING CREEK.  We will be happy to contact the Museum and arrange for your walk back in time!

Our historic Newton County Courthouse, built in 1902 and completed in 1903, is only one of two remaining courthouses in the State of Texas that feature the
Second Empire Style architecture.

The Courthouse survived a devastating fire on August 4th, 2000 and restoration has begun under the guidance of the Texas Historical Commission.

While visiting Newton, you can view the progress of reconstruction and stop by the History Museum to view several of the historical items that were salvaged following the fire.  Restoration should begin in 2006.

The Civic Center is home to the Newton County Historical Commission and Museum. You can visit the days of old and see a variety of historical items collected over the years including tools, pictures and other interesting items collected from the old East
Texas sawmill days.

The Genealogy records span some 2 centuries!  For the 33rd consecutive year, the Newton County Historical Commission has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award ... an accomplishment few communities can claim in the State of Texas!
